Volubilis ist einer der bedeutendsten, antiken Ausgrabungsstätten der Römer in Nordafrika. Volubilis wurde ca. 25 vor Christi Geburt gegründet. Unter den Römern war Volubilis eine wichtige Provinzhauptstadt im römischen Bereich. Die Stadt hatte bis zu 10.000 Einwohner. Im 5. Jahrhundert wurden die Römer vertrieben. Im 8. Jahrhundert machten die Bewohner Idriss I. zu ihrem Führer. Mit der Gründung von Fes verlor Volubilis an Bedeutung. Teile der Steine und Marmors wurden für die Bauten in Fes und Meknes benutzt. Die Stadt wurde verlassen.
