Unfortunately, I've never had the opportunity to see something like this live myself, as I live in the middle of Hamburg, where it's far too bright at night, but there are lots of webcams of very lonely areas on www.foto-webcam.eu, for example - and almost all of them looked very pink last night, beautiful!

A wonderful photo! Regrettably I wasn't aware of this last night. I am currently in an area with low light pollution but maybe still to far in the south. This evening I will be back in a big city where I don't expect it to be visible.

Very impressive. The location is even further south than Germany. And even here, it's very rare to see something like this.

I had read something about the reason for the uneven locations of light. It had to do with the strength of the storm's explosions, how far into space they traveled, and so on. Thanks, jeybee!

Lucky lady Diane, Where I live I'm too far North of the South Pole to see these, 27.5 degrees S. I remember seeing them one evening the year I started school when the area I grew up in was at the northern edge of Sydney.

I'm a real stranger to how it all works, having never had to look for these lights! This was probably a once-in-a-life experience for me.

Where I grew up in Sydney, approx 34 deg south I've seen, when a kid, the red glow when places further south have seen the waving colours that you did. I live at 27 deg south which is too far north. The auroras are mostly seen in the north and south polar regions. Sometimes the sun gets a bit 'angry' and sends out more magnetic fields the auroras are seen further from the polar regions.
