The cardboard arranger

The cardboard arranger
Through a very dirty car window. I was waiting in line at the drugstore drive-through.

Steve Bucknell, Andy Rodker, Marko Novosel, Ronald Losure and 4 other people have particularly liked this photo

A homeless man moving pieces of trash and cardboard around, over and over again. Like building a nest, but never finishing. He had no shoes and was walking on hot asphalt on a blistering day. I went over to give him some water and we had a chat about mental health stuff. He was friendly, funny, and fairly insightful about his schizophrenia. Off his medication...

Oddly enough, I had another experience yesterday in a grocery store, that time a homeless woman. She asked if I could buy her an avocado and two bananas, so I did. I just kind of enjoy small things like that.

He had just been kicked out of the homeless shelter for yelling and swearing at people. (It happens that my favorite mental health clients were always schizophrenic males.) He was aware of the local MH.and other resources, but had been off meds for a month and was not able to organize help on his own. We talked about how he could do that. It turned out that he recognized me from my County MH days.

Many different theories are going through my mind and very few of them are particularly positive.

A Schizophrenic, Disorganized Type. I gave him some water. Homeless, unable to follow rules at the shelter, so was kicked out. For a few minutes, I enjoyed my old role, gave him some pointers on getting help and I hope he is able to follow through. He knows where to get it, but is reluctant and in a terrible muddle. He was quite an interesting fellow.

Kleine Geschenke machen das Leben erst interessant, vor allem wenn man Leuten hilft die vom Leben nicht viel zu erwarten haben, ob selbstverschuldet oder nicht. Es freut mich, das dein Wissen immer noch gefragt ist.
