Carts

Carts
Fred Meyer has to send a truck every few weeks to pick up their carts. At least the tenants in these apartments are too old to throw them in the canal.

Strange concept to me - that of taking the shopping trolleys home! They are strictly controlled in British and Spanish supermarkets. In order to use one you need to put a coin in the trolley to unlock it from the one it is stacked behind. You can only retrieve your money when you return the trolley to to the line. You probably know this but I am surprised that it doesn't seem to apply near you!

Some stores in big cities have a system like that and all airports do for luggage carts. I am almost sure it's factored in as part of retail public relations, the cost of doing business, and so on. The most important principle is to keep customers coming back. In neighborhoods where a lot of elderly people live (like where I am), many people have no transportation and there are few buses. Another factor: stores are enormous, therefore the parking lots are acres to cover on foot. People (lazy Americans) would not shop at stores where they had to walk the cart back from their cars to the store for their 25 cents. Anyway, the "cart retriever man" has a regular route where carts are generally found.

Ridiculous, but that's just how it goes. I've seen quite a few photos on Ipernity and elsewhere of stray carts in the UK! ;-o
