There once (in better days of the USA) was an old joke about Britain and the USA:
What is the difference between USA and Great Britain?
=> USA has Bob Hope and Johnny Cash. In GB is no hope and no cash.

So, when looking like your ordinary self, you are experiencing the plight of older females: invisibility. This is a researched and documented phenomenon! And, so is the experience you've had in what clothes you wear in public, but obviously, that is much more pronounced in Spain than the UK or US!
