Fanatical gun people aren't listening and never will, but I'm hoping the ones that have some doubts are listening. I think this girl is a good role model for young people for losing your temper in public in a productive way.

I said to a friend recently that I thought nothing would change, the guns are out there, you can’t get them back. She said to me, no, it would change eventually, that was certain. I think she’s on the right track.

It takes deep cultural change, which will take a few generations, but first we need laws. Many cruelties were acceptable in the past, but faded out due to gradual change. So, I hold on to that hope. On the other hand, Republicans blocked all of Obama's gun control proposals after the slaughter of 20 first-graders and six of their teachers in 2012. Twenty little kids! It's terrific to think that anyone, with a clean record, can buy military-style semiautomatic rifles in a matter of minutes !!

Yes, this happened in Florida, which has no gun laws. Anyone can buy any gun, can buy as many as he wants, can carry them around...Many other states are almost as bad. It's crazy!!!

Thanks for sharing this Diane............it's sobering stuff..!! We in the UK sometimes struggle to understand the politics involved in gun control in the US, especially when all the States seem to have different rules. This incident has been well reported here, and the statistics on gun-related deaths are almost unbelievable. I'd really like to believe this tragic and senseless incident will prove to be a turning point. Let's hope so..!!

Oh, your bafflement is shared by millions of Americans, too. The majority of us, whenever polled, favor strict gun laws and outright bans on automatic weapons. This is a case of profound corruption, as the National Rifle Assoc. donates millions of dollars to Republican politicians every year. In turn, the Republicans in Congress consistently vote against any proposed laws to further regulate guns. This is what their constituents want, too, so they're all happy! Turning point...oh, I hope so.

Keith has said it all ........I can't speak for all of the UK, but in my local town all Schools are locked you have to press the button to get in. obviously not for gunman but paedophiles that try to gain access to children.
My condolences go out to all those poor children & families from all schools over the years & yes it was a powerful speech from that young girl more should make a stand !!!

Thank you, Marj. Locking the school is a great idea. I think that's done in some school districts, but probably not in most. Some have guards, some have a police officer on duty. This school had a policeman in the school that day (!), but it did not matter - because of the kind of weapon he had, the killer was able to shoot many people before he escaped the school.

Sickening...yes, I hope this is the start of a big protest movement. I think it will be more effective than the rather measured demands of parents in the past. It needs public outrage on a large scale.

I saw the speech yesterday and was and am so full of admiration for that young lady. Look to the next "President" maybe in 30 years time. She has huge presence and this is the one thing we have to be thankful to the orange travesty for.. he has motivated 2 generations to vote and indeed govern when they had no interest. Well now they are fired up and may be the saving of the human race.
