Nothing like that survives here.. what the gophers dont eat.. the 115f kills.

I understand what you mean. We've probably got fewer gophers, but I had an awful time with deer when I lived in the woods. Turns out "Deer resistant" just means, "Sometimes they'll eat it, sometimes they won't."

In the last three years deer have moved into the suburbs of town, so I'm still not safe!

Is this your garden, Diane? I'm impressed. Capability Brown did the same sort of thing.

Hahaha! I mean, yes, it is. I aim for the majestic, yet slightly wild look, too. So we have a lot in common.

Yep, just pack it with moss and planting mix, plunge the plants in, water - et voilà! ;-)

I should be able to keep them alive, Patrick! Merci.

Petunias (we are supposed to call them surfinas now, apparently), and maybe lemon balm?? Not sure about the name of the latter.

What? Surfinas...you mean like those elfin lady surfers in Drougialand? Well, that's silly, petunia is a perfectly good name. The vine is spotted dead nettle. At least it's not spotted death nettle. Or death metal.

Yes. They will remain petunias as far as I'm concerned. And It is also called spotted dead nettle in the UK, I just forgot.
Never had to contend with deer in Pinner, Middlesex. I did however once see an elderly lady with a trowel and plastic bag kneeling by a flowerbed in my front garden at 4 in the morning, helping herself to my dahlias. Fortunately it didn't happen again (after I'd shot her!).

Hahaha! That is one hilarious gardening story, Andy. The things elderly gardening ladies will do...! I had an incident last year when a neighbor saw a man come up to my tall, gorgeous delphiniums right by my front door. Broad daylight - and I was inside. He yanked the tallest stalk out of the middle, roots and all, and walked off with it. I was mad - my delphiniums, no less!

Delphiniums are special and delicate and despite being somewhat temperamental, repay a lot of love and care.
I would have tortuyed him slowly before killing him!

Oh, I thought about it! I was never successful with them in California. I lived on the coast and snails always ate them down to nubs before they even flowered and despite snail/slug bait. Here, nothing eats them except deer, but there aren't many of those in town. I keep thinking "this is the year they'll discover my delphiniums!" For care, all I do is start fertilizing in late winter and prop them up so they won't fall over. maybe I'll electrify the wire frame!

Ah, Bi-Mart! Usta have a Bi-Mart card when we lived in Washington--

Good old Bi-Mart! I shop there quite a bit because it's small and easy. Doesn't cover a square mile like Walmart, which my bad knees don't enjoy.

The Northwest chain we remember fondly is Fred Meyer. As big as the Wal-Box, but seems to have generally higher quality selection. A few years back we ended up spending a morning shopping at the Fred Meyer in Bellevue--isn't that what everyone does on their vacation?? ;)

Haha - of course! Right, that's a huge store, too, certainly more interesting than Walmart. It's the closest thing to a department store we have, even furniture, now.
