Oh, Shalamov?! Not many people have read that. I highly recommend Gulag, if you're interested in that topic. Really a masterpiece of research and the writing is superb.

"Article 58" was also a really good testimony !

I haven't read that, but it would be a good warning against The Orange Clown, if you know who I mean. Can't stand to even write the name...

Kind of helter-skelter taste, I suppose, but eclectic is a nicer way to put it - lol! Thanks, Pam.

That's the sort of chaos I like! The Chatwin is the only one I also own;-)

Oddly, that's the one I haven't ever read and I have no idea why! Maybe saving it for my old age - HA!

I like to tell my German friends that I read Gunther Grass (The Tin Drum) when I was 17 and he blew my mind! I've meant to re-read it for a long time. Thank you, Gudrun.

After reading the tin drum I liked eel even less than before- I always have to think of that dead horse's head....

I can't read on an e-reader, I go all mental and can't concentrate. Anyway, thanks, Keith!

I've never even heard of any of them though I did once hear an interview with Bruce Chatwin on the radio.

Reading on a desktop/laptop isn't too bad but Kindles and phones are out for me. Books Rule.

YES! I do quite a bit of laptop reading, often read news articles. But, for anything longer it's got to be a real, PAPER book! Has to have tangible pages, not pretend pages. If you like being depressed, read Gulag or The Forsaken - lol!
