Why Walk

Why Walk
The great American question!

This is no longer Can Am Motors and probably hasn't been in 20 years. It's now the car lot of a pawn shop, so if you see anything you like... I've had my eye on that cute 1950 Plymouth for a long time. www.ipernity.com/doc/1227338/36679428/in/album/746288

And here I thought you meant the question was why Canadians aren't Americans? :)

That didn't even register with me - haha! I wonder what the significance of that was. Oh boy, I don't want to offend anyone. ; )

You don't see Can-Am as a business name much these days. I wonder why that is. Probably the spread of transnational corporations. I'm surprised it would have been used in Oregon -- that's a bit far from the border.

I have two guesses: the owner was from Canada, or he delusions of grandeur and thought he'd be opening branches in Canada! Well, there's a third option: a combination of two owners' names, something like Candace + Ambrose. ; )

I hadn't thought about it, but "Can-Am" was a label I remember seeing regularly in the past. I assumed I stopped seeing it when I moved from Massachusetts to California in the early 80's, but it could be that it disappeared for other reasons. I wonder if the label is still used in the eastern U.S.

That's okay, I'm too old to care! Anyway, I refuse to walk several miles per day except in Italy.

I read a newspaper article that cited research that the residents of big cities walk more than people in small places, chiefly because if they get tired they can get on transit. When I was recovering from an operation ten years ago I walked only along main streets so I could hop on transit if I was suddenly overwhelmed.

That sounds reasonable. Besides, if you live in the suburbs you'll take up all of your spare time getting to the grocery store or your medical appointment. In a small town, the bus stops are few, or non-existent, and there isn't much of interest to look at while walking. There might not even be sidewalks. I never walk to do errands where I live, now, it's boring and there's no place to even stop and have coffee or browse for a good book.

That's what keeps me in midtown Toronto, Diane. In downtown and midtown 40% of households (including mine) never use cars. The ones that do use cars are lousy drivers, of course.

Why walk-haha! Strange enough but you can actually see Americans walking and using public transport in Europe;-)

Oh, yeah, we walk other places! I walked all over Rome, Florence and Siena. After a couple of days with aching feet and hips I got used to it. Everything is just way more compact in Europe. Try walking here every day! That would work in pedestrian-oriented cities like San Francisco, New York, New Orleans, etc. Impossible in Los Angeles, Dallas, or even the very small city where I live!

Keith, I'd love to if it (1) had an engine and (2) the engine compartment wasn't full of wasps! Both are deal-breakers, I think. Lol!
