Das Schloss Wiligrad wurde von 1896 bis 1898 nach Plänen von Albrecht Haupt und im Auftrag des Herzogs Johann Albrecht zu Mecklenburg und seiner Frau Herzogin Elisabeth errichtet. Den Bau und die Einrichtung finanzierte Herzogin Elisabeth mit dem von ihrer Mutter ererbten Vermögen. Das Schloss blieb bis 1945 in herzoglichem Besitz.
