Spring Point Ledge, Light house

Spring Point Ledge, Light house
Another lighthouse on this tour of three in Portland, Maine, USA. A longish run, skip and jump along this 900 metre breakwater after being warned that it was dangerous to walk on these slabs of natural stones. I took the risk after seeing quite a few families with young children also taking the same risk. Apparently, visitors can usually get inside and get the thrill of walking around the fenced verandas.

In the background we can see Fort Gorges built in 1858.

Built in 1898, Spring Point Ledge Light is a sparkplug lighthouse in Casco Bay, South Portland, that marks a dangerous reef on the west side of the main shipping channel into Portland Harbour. It is the only caisson-style light station in the United States. Visitors can walk to it, thanks to the breakwater built by the Army Corps of Engineer in 1950. It is still an active navigational aid, and was automated in the 20th century.

A lighthouse powered by solar panels? A very well documented place on your part. One of the lighthouses in my town is similar to this one. Kind regards, Anton.

We were on a tour and our guide only gave us a few minutes here saying that we would not have time to walk along the breakwater to the lighthouse and back safety. I proved her wrong! (Most of our company were not as fit as me. -even though I am far from very fit).

best Wishes. Herb

An interesting lighthouse image, Herb. I doubt there are many lighthouses not automated now.

Another short and squat lighthouse.............and it name is just perfect for it.

It looks quite splendid sat on the end of the breakwater and against the lovely sky. It's great to see them using solar panels too.

The rocks that make up the breakwater look very impressive and must have been difficult to transport and get into place. Well done for braving the walk :-)

Overall, a cracking shot Herb!

Yes, the name says it all. It did look rather nice here and it was a fine run to the end and back of this breakwater making sure that I did not fall between the deep gaps.
