Penmon lighthouse with Puffin Island

At the end of a little road, seemingly in the middle of nowhere is this marvellous little scene and if that was not enough we are treated to the blood-curdling toll of the single bell from the tower every 40 or so seconds. As I sit here, I spy a pleasure boat full of sightseers to go around the island in the hope of seeing the many puffins that give the Island its name. If not they may see the countless other birds or seals

A rather artistic view here but not a distraction I hope.

St Mary's Lighthouse

Old fort lighthouse, Corfu

18 May 2015 2 339
Atop the old fortress in Corfu Town stands this almost forlorn lighthouse overlooking the sea on three sides and the old town on the other. Its age eludes me as I cannot find any reference to that. This photo amazingly misses out the throngs of tourist who have, like me, climbed the heights to get here.

Another of Britain's iconic coastal scenes. This is on the far west coast of Anglesey, Wales. Taken during a visit in 2015 and posted now after a realisation that I had not shared these scenes with you my Ipernity viewers. Enjoy full screen. More info: www.southstacklighthouse.com PiP

Corsewall Lighthouse

07 May 2017 7 17 274
This wonderful lighthouse sits on Corsewall Point, Kirkcolm near Stranraer in Scotland. First lit in 1817 and now alas a hotel. I was lucky here with the matching sea and bluebell colours.

Mull of Galloway Lighthouse

A very impressive lighthouse that is now owned by a local trust. Perched on the edge of a 260 ft high cliff, the Mull of Galloway Lighthouse sits on the edge of Southern Scotland. It was built by Robert Stevenson, with work commencing in 1828 and taking two years to complete. The light, which stands 99m above sea level, was first lit on the 26th March 1830. The light remains operational today.

Port Logan Lighthouse at sunset

Port Logan on the 'Rhins of Galloway' in Scotland is a very sleepy seaside hamlet. One of its great worthy things to see though is its old lighthouse at the end of the old pier. The pier was part of an old harbour started in 1818 designed for ships to bring cattle over from Ireland. Now only used to shelter the odd craft.: LIGHTHOUSE TOWER: 3-stage circular tower, with open light-chamber to 3rd stage. Situated to NW of pier, incorporating and terminating parapet. Granite and sandstone ashlar. Band course between 1st and 2nd stages. Doorway to SE to ground floor chamber, with small fireplace and shelved recess. Forestair to doorway to S to 1st floor chamber; window to SW; open hatch to light chamber above (formerly accessed by ladder). Open light chamber, formed by 4 rebated square pillars carrying stone conical roof of concave profile. Latrine annexe. (http://www.britishlistedbuildings.co.uk)

A walk north a few miles from Port Patrick gives us this delightful view to the next lighthouse. We decided we had done enough walking at this point and so returned back to the town but not before taking a few snaps. Enjoy

Valentia Lighthouse at Cromwell Point

18 Sep 2018 18 8 429
The County Kerry Island of Valential can be quite wild as demonstrated here. We have always needed such lighthouses as this to ward off ships from these dangerous rocks. Close up in the PiP. Cromwell Point Lighthouse is maintained by the Commissioners of Irish Lights and is a harbour light to guide vessels from the sea and lead them through the northern entrance of Valentia Harbour past Harbour Rock. The site of the Cromwell Point Lighthouse was originally home to a Cromwell Feetwood Fort believed to have been built in the 16th century which was one of two built on Valentia Island around this time. The outline of the Cromwell Point fort with its bastions and barrack inside its wall can still be easily traced from the air, lying just inside the lighthouse enclosure wall. The fort was maintained after the Restoration and there are various State Paper entries about its repair over the period 1663-1665. It was disestablished in 1669. The first light for Cromwell Point was originally applied for on 30 March 1828 by the Right Honorary Maurice Fitzgerald, Knight of Kerry. Work commenced on the lighthouse ten years later in 1838, the light was first exhibited on 1 February 1841. Since November 1947 the light has been automated. www.valentiaisland.ie/explore-valentia/cromwell-point-lighthouse

Scurdie Ness Lighthouse

07 May 2019 24 22 500
Enjoy another lighthouse from me. This at Ferryden, Montrose. "Scurdie Ness is a headland located on the South side of the River South Esk estuary, Montrose, Scotland. The lighthouse is listed as a building of Architectural/Historic interest. In 1867 the sea-faring community of Ferryden made representations to the Commissioners of Northern Lighthouses to have a light established on Montrose Point at the rock-bound shore stretching between the Bell Rock and Girdle Ness which had been the scene of numerous shipwrecks and great loss of life. The lighthouse was built by David and Thomas Stevenson and on Tuesday 1 March 1870 at 1800 hours the tower was lit for the first time amidst cheers from the multitude gathered on the links and the sands. Originally the light character was fixed white but in 1907 was changed to isophase white 60 seconds (i.e, light 30 seconds, eclipse 30 seconds). The light currently flashes (3) white every 20 seconds and has a range of 23 nautical miles."

Girdle Ness Lighthouse, Aberdeen

09 May 2019 21 16 446
Another construction by the engineer Robert Stevenson, completed in 1833. It is situated near Torry Battery on the Girdle Ness peninsula just south of the entrance to Aberdeen's harbour, in Scotland. In 1813 the whaler Oscar was blown ashore in a storm into Greyhope Bay, at the entrance to Aberdeen Harbour. Despite rescue attempts only two men of the forty four on board were saved. The disaster had nothing to do with the lack of a light – the crew were drunk and incapable – but there were strong calls for a lighthouse to be built on the headland above the bay and this was achieved twenty years later here.
