The Children of Lir sculpture

The Children of Lir sculpture
Having walked along the sea-cliffs of this 'Children of Lir' loop (just beyond the top edge here), we come finally to a strange structure, namely the ‘Children of Lir’ sculpture. In truth we knew this was here as it denoted our turn-around point but we expected something more in the way of a ‘traditional’ sculpture. We found nothing explaining how these walls and bits represented elements of the story:

The Children of Lir sculpture - one of a series from the Spirit of Place Sculpture Trail which centres on culturally-distinct, historic, unspoiled and isolated regions around the world. The sculpture has significance to this area from where thousands of people have emigrated in the past to all parts of the world – bringing with them a strong spirit of place – but never to return.

The legend of The Children of Lir tells the tale of children who were turned into swans and condemned to wander the countryside for 900 years, 300 of these were spent on the north Mayo Island, Inishglora, 300 on Lough Derravaragh and 300 years in the Sea of Moyle (above County Antrim) .
More info on the legend: www.irishcentral.com/roots/irish-myth-children-lir-swan-lake

We were to visit the northern spot with another storyboard near Bushmills on our second week here. Inishglora Isand can just about be seen (I think) in the PiP photo.

Have a good day.

Thank you for the explanation Herb. It's a shame that the sculptures lack information and detail as to why it looks as it does. It looks more like a cow stall than a work of art. You have captured it well and it's always good to get information on these places. I shall now follow the link.
Have a good and hopefully cooler day. Cheers, Rosa.

Hello Rosa. Yes, we expected much more and we were amazed that this was the representation of the story here. Much better perhaps would have been a set of four swans set in granite. Anyway, great that you have followed us here and I really hope you got to read up more about the legend from the link. I shall continue to put a few more from this walk on here before moving on.

Have a great and hopefully cooler day. Herb

I enjoyed the link Herb, and agree with you that something quite spectacular could have been sculpted to represent the swans, maybe linked somehow. A missed opportunity.

Good evening, Rosa.

No seriously, I can't see what there is to dislike! Perhaps we should have a debate on its artistic merits and its impact on the countryside, etc. etc. The French can do this sort of thing (debate I mean) at the drop of a hat but we Anglos don't really feel comfortable with it. Definitely unusual Herb.................I've followed the link and am still baffled as to where this art installation fits in.

You've captured it in fine detail though...........

I am not surprised that you are baffled by it all Keith. We had some idea of the story and we were still baffled. As the main island of Inishglora where they were supposed to have been exiled sits slightly 15 miles SW of here and is far closer to my Cross Lake view, then I wonder why they put this here in the first place. The story itself, of course is just a fable but I think at the end of the day it is just another gimmick to bring in more tourist asking silly questions !!!

Glad you liked my shot though.

Sorry to hear that Gordon. Is it the new power supply that has blown? Maybe the one you bought was under-powered ?
I agree, perhaps the strangest 'sculpture' that I have ever seen too.

Keep cool. Herb

ps we will get to see more of your on-going growing collection of shots when you get sorted out with the right technology :)

We did too, on first coming across it. We were looking further for the 'real' sculpture. Glad you liked it though.

Hi Herb
A very nice picture, which I like very much!
Sometimes the ways of these 'art people' defy our logic! I am sure you remember (from many years ago) the art gallery who paid thousands for a pile of bricks!!!
Best Wishes, HWW, a nice week, and stay cool!!

Aye, I remember those bricks and also the preserved cow in formaldehyde gas, amongst other weird things in our museums today that the public pay a lot of money for. I believe some people actually go and look at them! Strange!!!

Best Wishes to you too. Herb
