The British Museum - Stairway of the ‘Great Court’

The British Museum - Stairway of the ‘Great Court’
A very rare phone photo here from me whilst on a lightning surprise trip to our capital, London. Part of this trip enabled me to see for the first time, the inside of this most precious esteemed building with all its delights of our worlds histories.
Before I got to explore (we only had couple of hours) I spot two wonderful staircases of which one is shown here. I never did get to go up it. I could write and leave millions of words of description here but I shall leave the research up to you my viewers. Only I shall say:

At the centre of the British Museum sits the largest covered public square in Europe, the Queen Elizabeth II Great Court.
Designed by Foster and Partners, the Great Court is a two-acre space enclosed by a spectacular glass roof with the world-famous Reading Room in the middle.
December 6th 2020 marked 20 years since the redesigned Great Court was opened. In that time, 113 million people have walked under the glass roof.
A place for all, free and open every day to visitors, the Great Court is one of London's most unique spaces. In the original Robert Smirke Great Court design, the courtyard was supposed to be a garden. However, from 1852 many bookstacks were built, and along with the Reading Room it became the home of the library department of the Museum. The department stayed in the Great Court until 1997, when it was relocated to the new British Library building in St Pancras. Now empty, the Museum took the opportunity to once again reopen the space to the public.

See followable PiPs.

My thanks Gordon. I must admit to decrying the use of phones instead of 'real' camera's but I have found that I have used mine more and more often, especially when I don't want to lug the bulk or weight around. In this trip, I had no idea where or what I was to see or visit and as it was getting darker I thought I would leave the camera in the hotel as I suspected a meal and theatre visit. The museum was an extra time killer only. If I go to London again I shall make time to spend more time in there. I only read about the great 'Reading Room' this yesterday, at home. I was lucky to have my phone that as you see, takes great photos.

Three great pictures of the interior Herb. It's a beautiful museum building, which I have never visited. Is the blue through the glass, the sky or is it coloured? It makes a stunning picture whichever it is. Thank you also for the information.

All the best,
Rosa.

Very happy that you liked the tree from this area Rosa. My limited research tells me the roof is constructed with 3,312 triangulated individual glass panels but I see no reference to the colour. Maybe the sky really was that colour but surrounded by high buildings outside, I had not noticed. I was just sorry that I did not poke my nose through the centre door to see, what I now know to be the centre of all this: the great reading room. Ah well, hopefully next time.

Aye, I bet there are many Londoners who have not been in most of its gems Greg. Yes, I would definitely make the effort to visit - maybe see old friends and relatives too :)

Thanks Keith. Of course I have always known of the museum with its multitude of great exhibits but I had failed to recognise how wonderful the fabric of the building itself was. I was quite pleased with this from my phone.

A great architectural shot, Herb. Like you, I was a reluctant camera shooter, but I also find the ready convenience is hard to resist when there's no other camera nearby, and the results (as here) can be remarkably good.

Thanks George. I see this is 12Mp so that is as good as my little expensive Canon was when new and I always thought that took great shots. I have been surprised at how good the phone handles difficult situations.

Very good pictures Herb'... can't fault a phone camera here... and as 'George' above writes.. 'the ready convenience' - is very useful... I would think that one could spend a whole day in the museum and still not see everything... Cheers from > Dj.
