I think it may be a crane fly, genus Limonia.

Thanks, Ron. In my Simon & Schuster insect guide I just found that this is a malaria mosquito. The range is southern Canada & Great Lakes region, throughout the eastern states down to Texas. I had no knowledge of malaria has caused many deaths in north America in the 1800s and during the building of the Erie Canal.

An excellent macro of a very delicate insect. I think Ronald is right (at least it doesn't look to me to be a female anopheles mosquito, but then I am often wrong).

I will name it anything the viewer think this is. The photo I referenced for Ron suggestion is not what this looks like, nor the description, but, I don't know much about insects, either.
