I think this is actually a silver-spotted skipper (Epargyreus clarus). Silverspot is another species found in the southwest USA and Mexico. I'm putting my new butterfly book to the test. I really like your zinnias. I hope we can plant some here next year.

Gorgeous photo of this butterfly and flowers. I think I may buy a potted zinnia and try to plant it.

Zinnias do very well in any soil. You can buy the seeds, they mature very easily.
