I did try to look them up Ronald, nearest I could get by Googling was Pine sawflies, Apparently they slice open the pine needle and lay some eggs before dropping to the ground where they overwinter underground and re-emerge in the Spring as a Sawfly.

Thanks, Maurice. I found some good photos of them on the University of Florida web-site. They are red-headed pine sawflies.
