Fort William (gälisch An Gearasdan ‚Die Festung‘) ist mit 5883 Einwohnern die größte Stadt der westlichen schottischen Highlands. Sie liegt am Ufer des Loch Linnhe am südlichen Ende des Great Glen. Durch die Nähe zum Ben Nevis, dem höchsten Berg Großbritanniens, ist Fort William eine touristische Hochburg mit Einkaufsstraße, Hotels und Bars. Fort William liegt am Ufer des Loch Linnhe, der längsten Meeresbucht (Sea Loch) Schottlands, an den Mündungen der Flüsse Nevis und Lochy. Die Stadt und ihre Stadtteile sind durch sehenswerte Berge wie dem Ben Nevis umgeben. Loch Eil ist eine weitere Meeresbucht, die sich in der Nähe der Stadt mit dem Loch Linnhe verbindet.
Die nächstliegenden größeren Städte sind Inverness im Nordosten (ca. 90 km entfernt), und Glasgow im Südosten (ca. 120 km entfernt). Fort William is a major tourist centre, with Glen Coe just to the south, Aonach Mòr to the east and Glenfinnan to the west, on the Road to the Isles. It is a centre for hillwalking and climbing due to its proximity to Ben Nevis and many other Munro mountains. It is also known for its nearby downhill mountain bike track. It is the start/end of both the West Highland Way (Milngavie-Fort William) and the Great Glen Way (a walk/cycle way Fort William-Inverness). Q: Wikipedia
