Fly Agaric (Amanita muscaria)

Famous, enchanting and highly toxic. Fly agaric is the home of fairies and magical creatures and a lover of birch woodland, where it helps trees by transferring nutrients into their roots, but if eaten can cause hallucinations and psychotic reactions and even death.

Iced fungi

My favourite sort of morning, low sun and thick frost. These tiny frosted fungi were found on a cut tree stump, which can be seem in PiP 1 if you look closely. PiP 2 shows a close-up of the larger fungus. PiP 3 is an ice puddle.

The Parasol, Macrolepiota procera.

Stem White/off white/cream, often very slightly mottled grey to brown with a kind of snakeskin effect. Coming from a bulb a little like the amanitas, strong and up to 30 cm almost always with the skirt still on nearly 2/3 of the way up the stem. Hollow on cutting and often very fibrous.

Puff balls. Lycoperdon species I think

These fungi were photographed on the same day as the bramble flowers. nature seems a bit confused. The second PiP is a mature form of Fly agaric.

Tiny mushroom growing in a pine cone. Baeospora myosura?

Our challenge for today was to find some very small fungi that grow in fallen pine cones. There is a mixed woodland near where we live with numerous pines, redwoods and spruce as well as broad-leaved trees' so off we went. We only found 2 in the whole of the woodland, both growing on Scots pine cones; but we thoroughly enjoyed the 3 mile walk and the thorough search.
