St.Chad's Church Tower

Not present at the moment in the now-disused churchyard is the headstone prop of Ebenezer Scrooge (played by George C. Scott) that was used in the 1984 film A Christmas Carol for the scene where Scrooge finds his own grave. The headstone was recently vandalized, you may have seen on the BBC news, and has been removed for repair.

Look this way or that way

One way looks toward the River Severn, and the other way looks towards the Quarry ( a park where festivals and shows occur) , the Dingle (a very ornate council run garden with a pool, originally set up by Percy Throwers) and St.Chad's Church - a handsome and interesting round church.

SC122 - Post 17 November from Isabel - Photograph something that depicts who you are or what you feel... Sometimes autumn makes me feel sad, especially if we get some really gloomy weather. But on certain days, when there has been mist or soft rain, then Nature can be seen in all its late autumn glory, like this, and my heart is happy.

HFF. Southern portal of the tunnel

This tunnel is a canal tunnel near Chirk, Wales. It lies on the Llangollen Canal, immediately northwards of the Chirk Aqueduct. It is 421 metres (460 yd) long and has a complete towpath inside. The tunnel is designed for a single standard narrowboat, so passing is not possible. The tunnel is straight enough to be able to see if a boat is already inside the tunnel, and boats are required to show a light. The tunnel was completed in in 1801.

HFF from Chirk aqueduct

18 Oct 2024 40 22 871
The aqueduct was designed by civil engineer Thomas Telford for the Ellesmere Canal. The resident engineer was M. Davidson who also acted as resident engineer on a number of Telford's other works. The foundation stone was laid on 17 June 1796 and it was completed in 1801. This is an amazingly short time. It has taken our local town council 2 years already to 'improve' the roads around the local station. The viaduct was designed by Henry Robertson, chief engineer of the Shrewsbury and Chester Railway, to carry the railway line across the meadows of the Vale of Ceiriog between Chirk and Chirk Bank partly in both Wales and England. The England–Wales border bisects the structure at an approximately 45° angle from south-west to north-east. It was built between 1846 and 1848, by Thomas Brassey, with it also undergoing a partial rebuilding in 1858–1859. Courtesy of en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chirk_Aqueduct
