Harvested field and wild flower strip
The crop of wheat was harvested in July before it was completely ripe. It was then transported to an anaerobic digester.
Anaerobic Digestion (AD) is a natural process where plant and animal materials (biomass) are broken down by micro-organisms in the absence of air. The AD process begins when biomass is put inside a sealed tank or digester.
Naturally occurring micro-organisms digest the biomass, which releases a methane-rich gas (biogas) that can be used to generate renewable heat and power; this helps cut fossil fuel use and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The remaining material (digestate) is rich in nutrients, so it can be used as a fertiliser. The local farmer has now returned some of the digestate back onto the field as fertilser. This can be seen in the PiP
The wild flower strip has been, and still is, a delight providing a valuable food source for a wide variety of insects, as well as for species higher in the food chain.
All in all I think this has been a great success.
