Home is where the hearth is.

The Sunday Challenge: FLAMES.

There's nothing quite so comforting as an open fire is there? One can sit and watch the ever changing pattern of the flames, make toast, smell the wood smoke and generally sit in glowing comfort. Of course there are downsides. Clearing out the ash, bringing in more coal and logs and resetting the fire. Is it all worth it? We also have a pretend coal, enclosed gas fire in the study (see the blue flames on the pic below). Quick and easy, no mess, no fuss, no bother. Which would you choose?

P.S: I actually like all the task what one has to do before and after ;-) Especially chopping wood is very relaxing. And also cleaning the fire place is somehow a task that puts all other stressful things away from the mind. I once lived in an apartment where we had a fire place. And I do miss it a lot!

A beautiful image. Open fires remind me of my childhood when we had no money, no firelighters and poor quality coal. In winter I came home from school to a frozen house and had to light the fire with paper and cinders. My mother was widowed and out working. I don't think I've lit a fire since. Even my pretend fire isn't on much. I love my central heating and try to mitigate the environmental effects by lots of insulation, keeping it well serviced an using a green energy supplier. I feel a bit guilty as I could have solar panels but haven't done it yet.

I admit that this open fire has a lot more appeal than a radiator. :-)))
