My cleaner, Emily, cleaned my ceiling lights in my lounge two weeks ago, and I remember how pleased I was with being able to look up to the ceiling with the lights on and not see damn cobwebs!!!
So you can imagine how miffed I was when I looked up the other day and saw this....
I mean - come on!!! How quickly were those spiders working to make this? They'd even found time to ensnare a "daddy longlegs" aka cranefly. (This is a British daddy longlegs which is different apparently from other countries!)
The white tape is in fact a piece of selotape I put up there to hold the light fitting because it was loose. It's a very old light fitment - it was there when we moved in in 1959!! My parents had it rewired, and it's been checked regularly since. Anyway that's by and by - this is all about these damn spiders in my house. Now outside is not a problem - spiders being there I mean, but they are not on the deeds of this house, so they can't call it home!! My name is on the deeds!!!!! So I tend to take exception to them making their many homes all over the place - poor Emily went all around the downstairs of this house, with the hoover going mad and she said there had been quite a few cobwebs - only two weeks old - and all over the ceilings!! Not a happy bunny I can tell you! Still I am very lucky to have such a lovely girl like Emily whose sunny disposition cheers me up, and she doubly did that today - my downstairs is web-free!!! For now.......
Even though I was annoyed to see them, I took some pictures because it looked pretty!!!
Looking at it closely - it does seem to be made up of more than one web!!! Or else the spider was on medication!!!
Sorry to regale you with a nonsensical story, but my life at the moment is blissfully quiet. Autumn (Fall to you all in the US) has already started to take hold of the garden. Leaves are changing colour and there is a distinctive chill in the air. On Wednesday I have a sweep coming to clean my lounge chimney, so this year I'll be able to have an open fire to keep me warm!! It's been over 2 years since I last had a coal fire because I had my bed infront of it - now I'll be all snug when the weather is really cold outside. Also I have recently bought a soup maker and a bread maker - so good wholesome food will be made to keep my insides nice and cosy. It should be a cheaper winter for heating too - I'd already bought 4 bags of coal which went into my bunker, also I've had a couple of trees knocked down, so that's wood, and I've got loads of kindling, as well as fire lighters and a huge stack of paper!! So that's all good. Mind you - I am hoping to go to Turkey for a couple of months, so this will all last even longer!!!
Oh well tomorrow I'll be watching the qualifying Formula 1 race in Japan and on Sunday - the race. I'm not really one for sport, but I do enjoy motor sports, as well as motorbikes, and some skiing I may watch - and also some cycling races, but that's about all.
Just a couple of pics of Pippin....

Think of how many flying insects there would be without them, however I must say that wheel type webs belong outside, but you'd still be likely to have lts of Celler spiders making their sticky threads all over everything, they can't be seen until they've collected lots of cooking steam or smoke etc, before you notice them which may as here be when one strand breaks loose and dangles in front of your eyes, grab a feather duster to remove it and wow where did this lot come from as each one will pull on the next and so on.
Celler Spiders have smallbodies and extremely long legs.

Hope your plans to go away come to fruition, it'll be nicer there than wintering here I'm sure.
Jenny McIntyre club has replied to Bee OrchidThere was one web on the outside of the bedroom window a few months ago - it was collecting a large number of midges, so I left it in place.
