ABOUT CONFINEMENT:

"At rest in a room"
by Gaspard Koenig

Are the containment measures preparing for an epidemic of depression? A study published in the scientific journal General Psychiatry analyses the disorders linked to forced isolation in China and Hong Kong: anxiety, depression, phobias, compulsive behaviour, which can degenerate into severe psychological distress in 5% of subjects. How to (re)learn to live alone with oneself?

The study seems to give reason to Pascal, who in his famous thought 192 on the misery of man noted "that all the misfortune of men comes from not knowing how to rest in a room". Accustomed to frenetic entertainment, fleeing from the reality of our condition in gambling as in business, we take refuge in a perpetual dissatisfaction, always filled with new and vain challenges. When we suddenly find ourselves face to face with ourselves, what do we see? An "unavoidable mass of misery", punctuated by certain death, with or without coronavirus.

If loneliness is so painful for us, it is because the "I" is hateful. "The man who loves only himself hates nothing but being alone with himself. "He then measures the emptiness of his being. Except in religion, the object of the no less famous Easter wager, no peace is possible for a humanity that loves the excitement of the hunt but immediately turns away from the catch. Parisians spinning in their fifty square meters will have all the leisure, once the premium content of Pornhub (offered by the platform because of viruses!) is exhausted, to meditate on the inconsistency of their desires.

We nevertheless know a predecessor of Pascal's who was perfectly happy in his room: Michel de Montaigne. Refugee from the tumult of the Court in his Gascon estate, he spends his days in a vast circular library: "there I leaf through a book at this hour, at this hour through another, without order and without drawing, with loose pieces". He recommends that everyone should have a "corner" where they can withdraw from society as well as from their own family. He said: "A wretch who has no home, no place to belong".

This voluntary confinement can only bear fruit if it is accompanied by work on oneself. "The loneliness that I love and preach is, above all, only to bring my affections and thoughts back to me. "It is by first becoming oneself that one can then take care of the affairs of the world. The ego may be hateful in its raw state, but it takes on consistency as one examines it - which is the whole point of the Essays, trying to grasp, through an exposed soul, what is universal in humanity.

This recipe did not escape Stefan Zweig, exiled to Petropolis in the middle of the World War. Zweig devoted his last biography to Montaigne. In order to "remain faithful to his innermost self in times of mass madness", he wanted to step back from his tormented era. In vain, since he committed suicide in February 1942. Let's hope that confinement works better for us!

I, for one, don't need to think such lofty thoughts yet! I have writing to finish, things that should have been organized long ago, a dog to take us on long walks, and connections to people so long as there is internet or telephone, superficial as all that may be.

The photo - so well composed, and the color scheme is wonderful - almost like Santorini!

In our South we have very similar architecture to Greece. I had a house in Santorini long time ago and felt there almost like if it was my country... except for the langage!
I am good at home too and lots of things to do, read, etc between two dog walks!
