Santiago de Cuba is considered to be the most Caribbean of cities in Cuba and is the traditional site of two important popular festivities: the Carnivals and the Fiesta del Fuego, or Feast of Fire. We had a great time with the people of Cuban rhythm. At Plaza de Dolores in Santiago de Cuba masked and bodypainted young boy dancing and singing in the park.

The Cathedral and Church "Nuestra Señora de la Asunción", arises at the beginning of the XVI century in the village of Baracoa once founded the same one. This Church for that time parochial was known with the name of La Iglesia Parroquial de la Villa de Baracoa. April 28 1522, a bull of the Pontiff Alejandro VI, transferred to the village of Santiago de Cuba the Bishopric, elevated the Church to the range of Cathedral of the Island and Religious Center of Lousiana and Florida; which conserved the name of the Church of the village of Baracoa “Nuestra Señora de la Asunción".

Lucrecia was the youngest family member of our host in Santiago de Cuba wher we stayed in a Casa Particular a private guesthouse. The talk about her education was very interesting: Education is open to all irrespective of caste, age and sex. There is no education for different social classes in Cuba. Primary education gets great priority. Going to the schools is a must for all children. A great benefit which got speat out after Castros revolution over the island of Cuba.

Ibrahim Ferrer was a popular Afro-Cuban musician in Cuba and got very famous as a member of the several surviving members of the Buena Vista Social Club, Ibrahim Ferrer died at age 78 of multiple organ failure on August 6, 2005 in Havana after returning from a European tour. He was buried in the Colón Cemetery in Havana.

At the other side of Havana Port we reached the suburb called Casa Blanca. The scenes in the public are quiet different the life in Havanas historic city. People mostly life ourtside their houses and the visitor gets the feeling to be integrated in their live running.

The most eastern point on the island Cuba. On clear days the visibility is possilbe to the mountain range of Haiti. This point was restricted for all visitors due the operations against smuggle gangs from Jamaica and Mexico which offen landed at this coast to spread its illegal cargo.

Guantánamo was the part of the island where Christoph Columbus landed America more than 500 years ago. Guantánamo is a province on Cuba, its very clean main town is called Guantánamo too. However the US enclave Guantánamo has become a detestable image worldwide due the detention camp for unlawful locked up enemies. The occupation of the US part Guantánamo is illegal since 2002 due the lease from 1903 between Cuba and USA valid for 99 years only.

27 km outside from Baracoa its the worth seeing National Park Alejandro de Humboldt where we had a tour for 3 hours to enjoy visiting great fauna and flora. In from of the entrance to the park was passing this oldtimer car, a Chevrolet Bell Air which was built in 1955. The cars condition was like seeing a new one.

Manaca-Iznaga Tower nearby Trinidad

Twelve kilometers northwest of Trinidad, the Manaca-Iznaga Tower continues to watch over the Valle de los Ingenios (Valley of the Sugar Mills) as it did over 180 years, although its purpose today has nothing to do with its origin.
