Merlin Bird ID app

Merlin Bird ID app
A free APP for Apple or Android systems
From Cornell Labs.

Picture in picture shows the original photo. I was amazed this app could ID a Tree Pipit from so few pixels.

BUT the best feature of the app is it includes SOUND ID.

You know all those surveys that ask “Would you recommend our product/shop/service etc. ?”.
I usually answer with a middle score and say I wouldn’t dare recommend anything to anyone (even if I think it’s OK). BUT this is an exception if you have one of those fancy smartphones and are even slightly interested in what was that bird singing over there ? I recommend it.

This is a revelation and a real bringer of joy ( for me at least)

Paolo Tanino has particularly liked this photo

I usually use BirdNET..............which I've always found works very well, but I'll investigate this one as well. Thanks for sharing Colin.

PS: I use an Android phone, so I've no idea if BirdNET works on Apple as well.

Not tried BirdNet but reading about it the difference appears to be that Merlin Sound gives results as it records. So if out walking past many birds singing at once it is good at making a list of the ones singing and I then like the challenge of trying to actually see them all!
Or of course IDing an unfamiliar call like it did for me this week with Garden Warbler which I would probably have called Blackcap in the past.
