I saw exactly that over a couple of days in a garden of mine in the UK, Colin.
I had put up a box and for three years had success with successive blue tit broods. Then one day I heard the "rat-a-tat-tat" of the woodpecker and knew exactly was was going on.
End of blue tits nest.

Interesting, this was in a local woodland but we had the same experience as you in the garden. We managed to save the nest and the box which is still in use 10 years later buy placing a metal plate around the entrance hole. This deterred the Woodpecker but there was an element of luck as I have also seen Woodpecker break into nestboxes by creating a new entrance!

Oh dear.............such a shame for the blue tits.............but of course perfectly natural for the woodpecker!

A super shot though!
