clay pipe fragments and oyster shells form victorian times, the c19 equivalent of fag ends and fast food wrappers. picked up in a five minute stroll, which shows just how ubiquitous they are, along with vast quantities of animal bones of all sorts.

I have a friend who makes great jewelry and other things out of pipe fragments www.amelia-parker.com She's done a wonderful series of note cards that are photos of assemblages of London landmarks that she's made from bits of pipe.

there must be literally tons of stems along the shore, bowls are a little rarer as they break much more easily. I've found c17th ones sometimes, but I'm not a serious searcher like some; I just like a wander when I'm working nearby
