part of the tomb of sir richard atkins, +1689, by william stanton. these are the atkins children, this section erected c.1680, before his death. the whole tomb spent more than 100 years buried in a vault after the old church was demolished; now the figures languish in a side room of the church with plaster saints, chairs and even an old bed for company. they deserve better.

it's a great shame that the monument hasn't been rebuilt in its original form, as the standard of workmanship is superb; I especially liked the hands. before its destruction, these three figures were on the reredos background above and behind their reclining parents, with the youngest child in the middle, under a segmental pediment held up by columns to each side. they are presently in a low poorly lit store room that was once set out as a chapel but is now full of junk. the monument is by a long way the best thing here, but well worth the trip if you can get into the church. no details of opening times on the website or in the church; i rang the office repeatedly during office hours but got no answer, so I risked the journey and was lucky enough to find a piano tuner inside. later contact with a church official showed them less than welcoming.
