This is a large bird that feeds on insects and animals, including snakes. It shows a remarkable resemblance to the Secretary Bird, which occupies a similar ecological niche in African savanna.

Weird lizard behaviour

We assume the one with its tail up is the female. Strange behaviour, although nothing much happened on this occasion. Maybe she didn't like the look of him? These were running around the dining area at Caranda Lodge.
Great Potoo (and chick)
|
|
An amazing bird that mimics a broken branch! This one has a chick, if you look closely. They fly at night with their mouths open, trawling up insects for food, rather like a basking shark in the air.
Burrowing Owls

Adult on the left and its chick. The bare soil is what they have dug out from their burrow.

This female was sitting on eggs, so didn't move, even when we got very close. She isn't sitting down on her eggs because she isn't keeping them warm, she is shading them from the sun (it was about 38C in the shade!).

Hot, still, sultry evening. Dozens of nightjars were feeding overhead and the big Fishing Bats came out soon after.
