2012 visit to the Amazon and Pantanal regions of Brazil. Comprises photographs by both Steve and Belinda Garland

Sereima

16 Oct 2012 162
This is a large bird that feeds on insects and animals, including snakes. It shows a remarkable resemblance to the Secretary Bird, which occupies a similar ecological niche in African savanna.

Roosting Jabiru

16 Oct 2012 132
Two Jabiru Storks roosting in a tree in the Pantanal.

Anyone for a swim?

17 Oct 2012 111
A large pool absolutely crammed with Caiman of all sizes.

Weird lizard behaviour

17 Oct 2012 162
We assume the one with its tail up is the female. Strange behaviour, although nothing much happened on this occasion. Maybe she didn't like the look of him? These were running around the dining area at Caranda Lodge.

Great Potoo (and chick)

17 Oct 2012 132
An amazing bird that mimics a broken branch! This one has a chick, if you look closely. They fly at night with their mouths open, trawling up insects for food, rather like a basking shark in the air.

Burrowing Owls

18 Oct 2012 115
Adult on the left and its chick. The bare soil is what they have dug out from their burrow.

Iguana

18 Oct 2012 126
This is a young one, about 1 metre long.

Brown Capuchin

18 Oct 2012 131
One of the commonest monkeys in the Pantanal and southern Amazon.

Southern Lapwing

19 Oct 2012 133
This female was sitting on eggs, so didn't move, even when we got very close. She isn't sitting down on her eggs because she isn't keeping them warm, she is shading them from the sun (it was about 38C in the shade!).

Capybara and friend

07 Oct 2012 107
An adult male Capybara with a Black-capped Donacobius on its back.

Cuiaba River sunrise

08 Oct 2012 120
Pantanal riverside scene at Porto Jofre

Tree Frog

08 Oct 2012 127
Tree Frog on the chair outside our room at the Jaguar Eco Lodge. About 12 cm long!

Tree Frog

08 Oct 2012 144
Another big frog at the Jaguar Eco Lodge.

Butterflies

09 Oct 2012 133
Big patch of sulphur butterflies feeding on salts on the banks of the Cuiaba River.

Pantanal riverside

09 Oct 2012 148
Typical riverside habitat, with lianas.

Pantanal boat ride

09 Oct 2012 122
Some of our merry band on our boat, with our guides.

Pantanal sunset

09 Oct 2012 148
Hot, still, sultry evening. Dozens of nightjars were feeding overhead and the big Fishing Bats came out soon after.
