Singer Sewing Machine, Crail Museum

Singer Sewing Machine, Crail Museum
Crail... is a former royal burgh, parish and community council area (Royal Burgh of Crail and District) in the East Neuk of Fife, Scotland. The civil parish has a population of 1,812 (in 2011). The name Crail was recorded in 1148 as Cherel and in 1153 as Karel. The first element is the Pictish *cair (c.f. Welsh caer) meaning "fort", though this word seems to have been borrowed into Gaelic. The second element may be either Gaelic ail, "rocks", or more problematically Pictish *al; no certain instance of this word exists in P-Celtic. However, if the generic element were Pictish, then this is likely of the specific. Quoted from Wikipedia

The Museum provides an insight into the past life of this ancient Royal Burgh, its kirk, seafaring tradition, Crail Golfing Society (founded in 1786 - the 7th oldest in the world) and airfield history from the First World War until its closure in 1960 (HMS Jackdaw, Fleet Air Arm Station, HMS Bruce Boys Training School and Joint Services School for Linguists). Quoted from the Crail Museum website

The factory was not far from where I live. The railway station there still bears the name of the factory. Thanks for your very kind comment, Fabio. Cheers, Joe

That is an old one Joe. It looks like it had some kind of industrial use. I wish I could read the information on the wall. I have seen many glove making machines and I wouldn't think it was used for that purpose. Can you tell me anything more about it?
All the best,
Rosa.

Thanks for your interest, Rosa. Before I retired I worked for the authority that holds the national collection of Singer Sewing Machines. I shared a building with over 800 sewing machines! My employer made a film called:

Sewing machine collection and Singer archive at Clydebank Museum Video

When I watch it I see some of my former colleagues.

Cheers,

Joe

Nice one, Joe. I remember my grandmother had one of the kind. My mother had a moderner one. I don't know how to use it, never learned :-))

My grandmother hand one too, Dany. I didn't learn to sew, but, when I was young, I used to love to operate the pedal. Thanks for your very kind comment. All the best, Joe

Thank you so much for the link Joe. The machines really are works of art aren't they! My sister-in-law still uses the one shown at 1.31 and how lovely to hear Rita Kerr reminisce. It would be a museum high on my list to visit....if only!

All the best, Rosa.

I remember the Singer Factory well, Rosa. I remember too the Singer clock, which was enormous. Scally could read the time on the clock, when he was in Gleniffer Braes Country Park in Paisley. Cheers, Joe
