14. Sigma 12-24mm f/4.5 - f/5.6 EX DG

A red sandstone Scots Baronial-Jacobean style building to the immediate south of Dumbarton Central station. Built 1900-1904, architect James Thomson. In the grounds are the College Bow, an arch left from the Collegiate Church of St Mary... On the south side of the building is a statue of Dr Peter Denny who oversaw an expansion of the Denny Shipyard on the River Leven. Quoted from the Railscot website

A very imposing building, Joe, and an imposing statue as well. I hope that Dr. Peter Denny had nothing to do with the slave trade. Are you getting fed up with changing lenses yet? ;-)

As far as I know, Amelia, Dr Denny had nothing to do with the slave trade. I think this is the only statue we have in Dumbarton. There was another one, but it was moved to Campbeltown. I am still enjoying my sell-challege. I am wondering which lens to use tomorrow. Cheers, Joe

You were out and about early today Joe! It is a beautiful, imposing building and suites mono very well. From your description I'm sure it would look good in colour as well. Cheers, Rosa.

I like the building. Grand but not too grand. The present focus on statues has made me look at them with new eyes. One thing I'm wondering about is the high plinths so many stand on. We have no choice but to look up to them and I think that's probably deliberate. Also who paid for them and why. Some of our local ones were funded by subscription. Maybe like leaving presents. You feel obliged to contribute when really you don't give a toss. And sometimes our opinion of the person represented has changed and the statue offends us. Yes they are history but I think we still need a spring clean from time to time. I would like this one better if it came off it's plinth and was moved to the side with more informal seating beside it. Then we could enjoy an uninterrupted view of the building and a closer view of the statue.
