'Titanic' Flotsam

'Titanic' Flotsam
V&A, Dundee

Fragment of an oak overdoor panel found floating on the surface of the Atlantic. This panel marks the point where the Titanic broke in half as it sank on the night of 14 April 1912. It is a remarkable survival and the largest remaining fragment from the ship. Situated over the door to the first-class lounge, the panel's motif of musical instruments carved in the Rococo style demonstrates the high-quality decoration on board. This is the first time the panel has been seen in Europe since the Titanic set sail.

Petar Bojić, Rosalyn Hilborne, John Goodwin, Andy Rodker and 5 other people have particularly liked this photo

Fascinating reading there Joe.. I enjoy history such as this... is there any info' as to 'when' the piece was found ? ..Re. shortly after the sinking in 1912 ? as the area was searched ?.. or more recently ?... Dj.

Judging by the good state of preservation, Dj it looks to me as if it must have been found pretty shortly after the tragedy.

Yes Andy...- there must have been lots of debris floating on the surface.. as the rescuers searched around... some picked up.. as this one - and much ignored... Cheers from Dj.

Thanks, Rosa. An exact replica of this features at the end of the Titanic film. They show the scene on a large nearby screen. Cheers, Joe
