Girdling is the complete removal of the bark from around the entire circumference of a tree. It results in the slow death over time (sometimes one to three years).
Ringelung ist die vollständige Entfernung eines Streifens der Rinde eines Baumes. In der Folge stirbt der Baum langsam ab (manchmal über ein bis drei Jahre).

Possibly the cruellest way to take down a tree .... :(

Siebbi club has replied to Annalia S.
That was my initial thought as well. But on the other hand this way the tree stands a longer time, so the remaining structure of the forest keeps its resistance against wind pressure, while losing its foliage the tree already gives way for the smaller trees to fill the potential gap.
