Die Michaelerkirche am zentralen Michaelerplatz in Wien wurde von 1219 bis 1221 durch den Babenberger Herzog Leopold VI. errichtet und ist eine der ältesten Kirchen Wiens. Die Michaelerkirche ist einer der wenigen romanischen Bauten in Wien. Manche Elemente wurden nachträglich aber auch im Barock oder klassizistisch überbaut. Die Kirche ist dem Erzengel Michael geweiht. Bekannt ist die Kirche vor allem wegen der Michaelergruft, in der manche Leichen aufgrund besonderer klimatischer Eigenschaften nicht verwesten, sondern mumifiziert wurden.

The church is best known for the Michaelergruft (St Michael's Crypt), in which some corpses were not decomposed but mummified due to special climatic characteristics.
