Wien, Stadtpark / Vienna, City Park
The photo shows the so-called Donauweibchen (Danube River woman), the sculpture at the Donauweibchen fountain in the NW part of the Viennese City Park. This sculpture was completed in 1862 by the sculptor Hanns Gasser and was to be erected in 1863 at the Fischhof in the City of Vienna, where the sales point of Vienna's professional fishermen was located at the time. For unknown reasons, however, this did not happen and it was stored for two years in the municipal material depot. It was not until 1865 that it was finally erected here in Vienna's City Park as a fountain figure. The Donauweibchen is a human-friendly mermaid somewhat reminiscent of Greek Venus statues and is an old motif from Viennese mythology. Unknown jokers could not help but climbed up to her and "beautified" her lips with red lipstick.
