Wenn der Regen fällt, schlüpfen die Jungfische und entwickeln sich rasend schnell zu Geschlechtstieren. Bis zum Austrocknen der (meist sehr kleinen) Gewässer bleibt nicht viel Zeit. Wenn die Sonne den letzten Tropfen Wasser weggeleckt hat, müssen die Kärpflinge sterben. Im Bodengrund lagern aber deren Eier. Zutretender Sauerstoff begünstigt die Embryonalentwicklung in den Eiern. Dieser Sauerstoff kommt mit dem Laich in Verbindung, wenn der ausgedörrte Boden Risse bekommt und es wird Leben in den Eiern erweckt, wenn wieder Regen fällt. So erhalten sich die Arten dieser farbenprächtigen Kärpflinge auch in kleinsten Kleingewässern (z.B. in Elephantenstapfen). Bleibt der Regen weg, - auch über Jahre, hilft sich die Natur mit Dauereiern, die jahrelang im trocknen Boden ausharren können und bei einsetzendem Regen neues Leben entlassen. So toll reagiert die Natur.
