The city of Bern was founded in 1191 and is situated on a peninsula of the Aare river. From the banks of the Aare river to the railway station is a 40 m difference in altitude. This explains the different location of the houses.

Obrigada Poly, interesting explanation. I have been in Bern and Solothurn about 40 years ago but don't remember exactly how it was...
