Basel/ Basle- The Cathedral
Constructed with distinctive dark-red sandstone brick, Basel’s massive cathedral stands on the Münsterhügel (Cathedral Hill) overlooking the River Rhine and is the city’s landmark building. It has a gaily patterned tiled roof plus twin spires and was built on the site of two much earlier churches. Today’s structure was started in the 12th century but was damaged by a disastrous earthquake in 1356 and rebuilt in its present Gothic incarnation by architect Johannes von Gmünd; Romanesque fragments that remain include the intricately carved Gallus Gate on the northern façade and the crypt, which has been restored and reopened to the public.
