Ghastly Grim
Dickens describes this in The Uncommercial Traveller : “The gate is ornamented with skulls and crossbones…wrought in stone; but it likewise came into the mind of St. Ghastly Grim that to stick iron spikes a-top of the stone skulls, as though they were impaled, would be a pleasant device. Therefore the skulls grin aloft horribly, thrust through and through with iron spears.”

St John's Gate
Built in 1504, St John’s Gate was the entrance to the priory of the Order of St John, the English headquarters of the crusading Knights Hospitallers, from 1140 until Henry VIII’s reign. It is now the headquarters of the Venerable Order of St John (a British Royal Order of Chivalry, founded in the nineteenth century) and was the birthplace of its two charities, St John Ambulance and the Eye Hospital in Jerusalem.
