IMG 0185-001-Column
St Albans Cathedral. Sign says, "This is the base of one of the massive tower columns built by Abbot Paul of Caen in 1077. The ancient plaster has fallen away to reveal red tiles and bricks. They are about 1,800 years old and come from Roman Verulamium. Over 900 years ago they were brought up the hill and recycled to build the Norman abbey. The plaster was made with lime, sand and water. Look carefully and you might be able to see the cow or horse hair that was mixed in to bind the ingredients together."
