Tomb of John Allan
Apparently this is the most expensive tomb in Nunhead Cemetery. Monument for John Allan (1790-1865). 1867. Sculptor: Matthew Noble. Allan was a ship builder. According to a cemetery plaque, “His son and partner, Col. Jon Harrison Allan was an amateur archeologist. It was probably he who designed the massive family tomb based on the Payava tomb at Xanthos.” More here: www.victorianweb.org/sculpture/funerary/152.html and www.mmtrust.org.uk/mausolea/view/323/Allan_Mausoleum
