Tolpuddle Street

Tolpuddle Street
The street was named in remembrance of the Tolpuddle Martyrs, a group of agricultural labourers who, in 1834, were convicted of swearing to a secret oath and sent off to Australia in punishment. 800,000 people signed a petition for their release, many of them from Islington. The Home Secretary agreed to release them in 1836. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tolpuddle_Martyrs
