Almshouses wall

Almshouses wall
HWW All, hope you're enjoying the week and that your weather is more cheerful than the soggy, grey and windy state of Somerset.

Sir Edward Hext built these almshouses back in 1626. Unfortunately he died and never saw the houses finished but his widow took over the project until its completion. They are now known as the Hext Almshouses.

The eight original houses were inhabited by eight men who were unable to work. The men were paid in coal and a monthly stipend to live there. In return they had to attend church every Sunday, non-attendance incurred a fine.
The houses were renovated and reduced to four, maintaining the original facade, in the last century, the original 8 houses considered too small. In recent years there have been 3 new almshouses added behind the original set.

"In return they had to attend church every Sunday, non-attendance incurred a fine." Always this religious hypocrisy... no generosity there.

I'm ignoring the title and the fact you've wished us all HFF as I'm in neither group :-))). But, I really like this image Maggie!

Your composition is spot on and I love the detail you've captured. Your black and white conversion is excellent with great contrast between the light and shadows and I also like the grey clouds. Dark, and moody.............a cracking shot!

An interesting narrative too...........and I also agree with Xata's views on the religious hypocrisy!

Looks great in b/w, Maggs. And it sort of gets the mood across of having been forced to attend church ;-) Or is it just the weather? Well, it was a rainy here in the morning and overcast with some sun in the afternoon, so not too bad. And I didn't have to go to church either ;-))

Thanks Edna, we did have a few intermittent rays sun this afternoon too.
Only time I go to church is to photograph church organ pipes ...
