Ivory Box from Sicily in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, February 2010

Ivory Box from Sicily in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, February 2010
Ivory Box
Paint and gilded silver mounts
South Italian, Sicily
Carved 1150-1250

Accession # 15.107

The culture of Sicily, which blended elements from the East and the West, produced luxury goods of exceptional quality. Cylindrical ivory boxes with painted decoration were carved from the lower part of an elephant's tusk in order to use as much of the tusk as possible. The silver mounts are original, but the painted design has faded.
