Head of the Buddha in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, September 2010

Head of the Buddha in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, September 2010
Head of Buddha

Date: 5th–6th century

Culture: Afghanistan (probably from Hadda)

Medium: Stucco with traces of paint

Dimensions: H. 7 1/4 in. (18.4 cm)

Classification: Sculpture

Credit Line: Rogers Fund, 1930

Accession Number: 30.32.5

Description:

The well-preserved surface and traces of paint provide a clear idea of what this exceptional head would have looked like when it was consecrated. The treatment of the eyes and intersecting plains of the forehead and eyebrows shows clear correspondences with the Gupta traditions of north India.
