Call of the Sea Sculpture in the Rose Arc Pool of the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, July 2008

Call of the Sea Sculpture in the Rose Arc Pool of the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, July 2008
The sprightly sculpture at the center of the Rose Arc Pool was created by Harriet Whitney Frishmuth (1880–1980), an American artist whose work is on display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the National Academy of Design. The Call of the Sea, as this statue is titled, epitomizes enthusiasm. The young girl riding joyfully astride a fish is surrounded by cattails (Typha species), aquatic perennials that flourish at the edges of lakes and ponds. Also found in the pool are giant water lilies (Victoria 'Longwood Hybrid'), which are also known as "water platters," perhaps because they can grow mammoth leaves up to eight feet wide.
