Detail of a Terracotta Kylix Attributed to an Artist near the Splanchnopt Painter in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, February 2008

Detail of a Terracotta Kylix Attributed to an Artist near the Splanchnopt Painter in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, February 2008
Terracotta kylix (drinking cup)
Greek, Attic, red-figure, ca. 460-450 BC
Attributed to an artist near the Splanchnopt Painter
Interior: Nike (Victory) greeting youth with lyre
Exterior, obverse: warriors departing
Exterior, reverse: Nikai and youths

Accession # 26.60.79

The decoration of the interior is particularly elaborate with two floral bands. The scene in the tondo may be interpreted as showing a schoolboy who has just won a musical contest. He stands on the performer's platform holding his lyre as Nike gestures toward him. The altar at left indicates that this is a special precinct, and the writing tablets suggest that he can write.

Text from the Metropolitan Museum of Art label.
