Gravestone of Tatianos and Tation in the Getty Villa, July 2008

Gravestone of Tatianos and Tation in the Getty Villa, July 2008
Gravestone of Tatianos and Tation
Roman, made in Phrygia (present-day Turkey), AD 150-175
Marble

Inventory # 83.AA.204

Items associated with this richly decorated couple surround them. The man, Tatianos, wears armor and holds a whip; a writing tablet and a pruning hook rest beside him. These attributes indicate that he was a solider and a man of learning who owned livestock and a vineyard. His wife, Tation, appears between a comb and a mirror, symbols of her beauty.
