Gravestone of Helena in the Getty Villa, July 2008

Gravestone of Helena in the Getty Villa, July 2008
Gravestone of Helena
Roman, 150-200 AD
Marble

Inventory # 71.AA.271

The inscription on the gravestone reads: "To Helena, foster daughter, incomparable and praise-worthy soul." It is unclear, however, whether the momument commemorates a girl or a dog named Helena. The dog's prominence in the elaborate architectural setting supports the idea that the gravestone honors an adored pet that was regarded as a family member.

Text from the Getty Villa museum label.
